TP-Link TL-R483E: five 2.5G ports and up to four WAN links

The TL-R483E v1.0 is a rack-style wired router with five 2.5G ports; up to four of those ports can be configured as WAN links. ACWiFi also read the TTL output to identify the CPU, memory, and flash, making the teardown more useful than a marketing port list alone.¹

Core hardware

The CPU is a Realtek RTL8198E with two Cortex-A55 cores up to 1.2 GHz and integrated 512 MB memory. The F50L1G41LB SLC QSPI NAND has 128 MB. The other four ports use an RTL8372N switch with four 2.5G PHYs; port 1, the default WAN, connects through an RTL8221B PHY.¹

The sample uses a 12V/1A adapter. Idle power is about 2.8 W and power with two 2.5G ports connected is about 4.4 W. The chassis is close to 29 cm wide and designed for rack mounting, so measure the network cabinet before buying.¹

Measurements and firmware limits

The source used packetmaster to measure bidirectional small-packet forwarding at about 3.55 Mpps per direction; all four 2.5G LAN ports were reported to run full-duplex at the same time. This is a result for the tested sample, not a promise for every firmware or packet size.¹

The important limitation is that the firmware did not support Wi‑Fi 7/MLO properties with the corresponding AP/router at the time of the teardown; the source suggested that a firmware update might be needed. The TL-R483E also has no PoE, so a comparison with PoE routers must include the cost of an additional switch.¹

HomeLab fit

If the requirement is a wired router with multiple 2.5G ports, four WAN links, and substantial memory, the TL-R483E has a clear use case in the source's comparison. The trade-offs are a large chassis and no PoE; do not buy it for the “2.5G” label without checking size, firmware, and the WAN/LAN assignment.¹

I would verify hardware version v1.0, the actual port map, 802.11be/MLO firmware support, and warranty status before putting it into a production network. A teardown does not prove long-term load handling, firewall features, or OpenWrt compatibility.¹
